Jeff Stelling

Just wanted to take an oppurtunity to advertise Jeff Stelling’s excellent book; Jeffanory. I am sure many of you know of Jeff’s “Lisa will be happy” line on Soccer Saturday every time Adam scored. Jeff donates a whole chapter of his book to Soccer Saturday’s unsung heroes and Adam is first in his list. Jeff has very kindly given us permission to quote directly from his book so here are a few excerpts for you.

“Anyone who’s been a friend of Soccer Saturday over the years would have been a friend of Adam Stansfield. The one-time Exeter City, Yeovil Town and Hereford United striker became linked to one of the longest-running gags on the show after i’d noticed his surname was identical to the 1980’s pop sensation Lisa Stansfield.”

“Because of my mucking around, Adam became a cult favourite with viewers and panelists alike. Luckily I got to use the joke quite a lot because scoring goals was something he did with regularity.”

Jeff goes on in great depth about Adam and how reading the news about Adam’s death on Soccer Saturday was one of the toughest things he has ever had to do. He tells how he attended a Foundation fundraising evening and he finishes his piece with a line from that night; “As I mentioned in a speach at the end, ‘Lisa would have been proud'”

The book is an excellent read and is very funny. We were all very touched that Jeff thought so highly of Adam and that he found a place for him in the book. It is well worth a read and is available online and in all good bookstores. It would make an excellent Christmas present for a loved one. xx

Here is the video of when Jeff paid tribute to Adam on Soccer Saturday shortly after Adam’s death:
